The UK Ladybird Survey.

Ladybirds are the gardeners best friend as the eat all the pesky aphids that ruin our flowers. Sadly, our native species are under threat from the invaision of the Harliquin Ladybird. Help their plight by joining the UK Ladybird Survey run by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH).

Bumblebees are in trouble! With their numbers in a deep decline and two species now extinct, there is a real worry about the future of our crops as bees are key pollinators in our ecosystem. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust have lots of ways you can help; from what plants to grow in your garden to encourage bees, to species surveys and posters you can download to spread the word in your area.

This Open University website is a great idea. Get help identfying your garden creepy crawlies by simply taking a picture and uploading it to the site. Your picture is then on display for people to click on and add an identification. Its great fun and your information can be added to nationwide survey data.

Gardening for Moths

Belive it or not, Moths and catapillers are not only pests in our gardens but really important too! Moths benefit plants by pollinating flowers while feeding on their nectar, and so help in seed production. Moths and their caterpillars are food for a wide variety of wildlife, including other insects, spiders, frogs, toads, lizards, shrews, hedgehogs, bats and birds. Use this link to find out what you can do to help conserve their declining numbers.
